The Artisan Enterprise Ecosystem, supported by the Global Alliance for Mass Entrepreneurship (GAME) and led by Saath Facilitators, is a collaborative initiative that brings together grassroots organisations, artisan enterprises, designers, institutions, and market partners to build stronger, more sustainable artisan businesses.
By strengthening enterprise capabilities, fostering innovation, and creating market opportunities, the initiative aims to enable women artisans and artisan-led enterprises to thrive in an evolving economy. The ecosystem promotes collaboration, knowledge sharing, and institutional strengthening to create long-term value for artisan communities while preserving India's rich craft traditions.
Why It Matters
Gujarat is home to a large number of women artisans engaged in traditional crafts, home-based work, and micro-enterprises. According to sector estimates, over 10–12 million women in India are engaged in home-based work, with a significant concentration in states like Gujarat. However, a majority of these artisans remain part of the informal economy, earning inconsistent incomes and lacking access to formal markets.
While several grassroots NGOs are working closely with these women, many face challenges such as:
• Limited access to structured markets and buyers
• Gaps in product innovation and quality standardisation
• Weak enterprise systems and financial planning
• Low digital readiness and limited e-commerce integration
Studies suggest that improving market access and enterprise capabilities can increase artisan incomes by 30–50%, yet most organisations lack the resources and technical expertise to achieve this independently. There is a clear need for a state-level ecosystem enabler that can aggregate efforts, strengthen institutional capacities, and connect grassroots organisations to sustainable market opportunities.
